Servers

A server is really only a computer that sends information stored on the computer to other computers, on request.
Other computers send a request to the server for information.
Then the server sends the requested information, such as a webpage, to the computer.

Host

A web host is a server that you store you website in. Other people's computer can't request webpages from just any computer such as yours(that is called hacking); the webpages need to be transferred to the Host, then people can request and view your webpage.

IP Address

An IP Address (Internet Protocol)is a set of numbers to identify every computer connected to the internet.
These numbers are assigned to each computer by your ISP. When you go to google.com in your browser,
your browser ask around for the the IP address of google.com's serer(computer) The actual 'address' of Google's server is a whole bunch of numbers, which is pretty hard to remember if there are a whole lot of websites to remember. The inventors of the internet thought that words(whatever.com) would probably be easier to remember that numbers (Imagine typing ten numbers for yahoo.com!). The whatever in whatever.com is called the domain name; the 'something' in something.whatever.com is called the subdomain; the whatever.com/somehting

Downloading means taking information from a sever by means of a request to the server.
When you downloaded the game Maple Syrup, or Maple Story, er whatever you call that,
your computer sends some code to the maple story website's server; when the server recieves the code,
the server identifies the scmputer that sent the code and sends the requested files to the computer.
When you go to a website, the server doesn't really send the website, but it sends the HTML code, which the browser on your computer turns into the website.

How does a website work?

Upload

Uploading, as you might have guessed is the opposite of downloading. Uploading is the process of sending information to the host. If you want to include a picture in your webpage, you must upload it to your server. Then you write the HTML code that tell the browser where the picture is located on your server. Your browser downloads the picture and puts it on the webpage.
